(New Podcast) What Music Becomes: The Stories We Carry in the Songs We Love

Have you ever heard a song and suddenly found yourself transported somewhere else?

Maybe it reminds you of a person you loved. Maybe it takes you back to high school, a first date, a road trip, a difficult season, or a moment when everything changed. Maybe a song helped you get through something you weren't sure you could survive.

That's the idea behind my new podcast, What Music Becomes.

What happens when music becomes part of our story?

As a counselor, I've spent much of my career listening to people's stories. I've heard people talk about relationships, addiction, recovery, grief, trauma, faith, identity, hope, and the experiences that have shaped who they are.

And I've noticed something along the way:

Most of us have a song that became a part of our story.

A particular song can become connected to a person, a place, a relationship, or a season of life. Sometimes we don't even choose it. A song simply becomes attached to a memory—and years later, the first few seconds can bring that memory rushing back.

That's what I wanted to explore with What Music Becomes.

This isn't a podcast about what a songwriter intended a song to mean. It's not a music-history podcast, and it's not music therapy.

Instead, I ask a much more personal question:

What did this song become for you?

Each episode is a conversation with someone about one meaningful song and the story surrounding it. We talk about the music, but ultimately, we're talking about people—their memories, relationships, struggles, joys, losses, identities, and the moments that have shaped them.

A few of the stories and the songs

The podcast launched in August 2026, and I've already had some incredible conversations.

Bob Marley and the Wailers — "Three Little Birds" with Roe Hunter

I sit down with Roe (a friend and fellow counselor) while he's getting a tattoo and talk about what Bob Marley and the Wailers' "Three Little Birds" became for him.

It's a conversation about music, life, and the way a familiar song can carry meaning that goes far beyond the lyrics.

Marvin Sapp — "The Best in Me" with Felecia Marshall

This is one of the most powerful conversations I've had on the podcast.

Felecia Marshall and I talk about Marvin Sapp's "The Best in Me" and what the song was for her daughter and what it became for her following the murder of her daughter, Lexi.

Music can sometimes give us language when ordinary words aren't enough. This conversation is ultimately about grief, love, memory, and the ways we carry people with us.

What does a song become when it becomes part of someone's journey?

In this conversation with DeSean, we explore Big K.R.I.T.'s "Make It Easy" and the personal meaning the song carries for him.

Some songs become especially meaningful because they meet us in the middle of a difficult journey.

Jason and I talk about Jason Isbell's "It Gets Easier," recovery from addiction, looking into our daughters' eyes without shame, gratitude, and even the experience of singing along with Isbell at Red Rocks.

It's a conversation about recovery—but it's also about what happens when a song gives us words for something we're trying to become.
